Can I perform work on my own house or do I need to hire a contractor?: There is an exemption under the Florida building code that allows a homeowner to act as a contractor with certain restrictions. (see Owner Builder Affidavit)

1. Do I need a permit for a fence?: Yes, all new and replaced fences are required to pull a permit.

2. Do I need a permit for a shed?: Yes, all sheds and carports will need a permit.

3. What do I need to apply for a permit?: We use one application for all building permits. Additional affidavits, plans, site plans, etc. may be required depending on the work being performed. (Permitting Requirements)

4. How long does it take to get a permit approved?: Simple permits such as: Re-roofing a house, replacing an air conditioner, are done over the counter. Applications that require Site and Plans review requires a minimum of 30 business days.

5. What form of payment do you accept?: Cash or Check only. All monetary transactions are between 8:00 a.m. and 4:10 p.m.

6. Do I need a permit to cut down a tree?: No permits are required on residential properties. All commercial property please contact the planning department.

7. What are the setbacks for my lot?: This depends on several factors including the zoning of your property, if it is in a subdivision, if it is a corner lot, etc. Call our building department at 813-780-0020 for more information.

9. Do I need to file a notice of commencement if I am pulling the permit as a homeowner?: Yes, state regulations require a notice of commencement be recorded with the county clerk’s office whenever the value of the work is $2,500 or more.
